At the moment, I'm moderately confident I'll be able to stay in Buenos Aires long-term. But like every other city I've lived in... government employees have been less than helpful and reliable. (To put it gently.) So to be proactive in case my situation changes, I've been spending a little more time on Reddit and in Facebook groups to see what the "best" cities to live in are right now. It's funny:If you read 10 posts about Buenos Aires—as an example—five will tell you:
The other five will tell you:
You'll find the same with posts about Rio, Valencia, Budapest, Cape Town, etc. The reality is, no matter where you live, the experience will be heavily dictated by the same few things:
That's it.I've lived in five different countries and nine different cities, and traveled to many more... and my experience has never NOT been mostly dictated by these three things. In typical Sam fashion, this made me think of fat loss: If you spend time on Reddit, Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, etc... you'll see endless conflicting opinions about what the "best" diet is and how to lose fat. But your success with any plan will—again—be dictated by just a few things. Like whether you:
Good stress management skills and sleep quality help a lot, too. But the above three make up most of the equation. The takeaway? No matter how much we scour the internet or social media, we'll never find the "best" city to live in or the "best" fat loss plan. They don't exist. So we need to focus on the very short list of high-yield things that'll dictate how we do with either. Don't let all the conflicting opinions convince you otherwise and stop you from taking action. Probably a year ago now, I read In Other Words on the recommendation of a client. It's a book about language learning, and the challenges and lessons that come with it. (Impressively, the author, Jhumpa Lahiri, wrote it in her third language: Italian.) An analogy in the book that resonated with me is how learning a language is like being on a beach, and having to swim out to an island to achieve fluency. But most people—myself included—only ever venture a little off shore (think basic...
If you want high quality, affordable supplements... Buenos Aires ain't it. Thanks to a history of limited imports from other countries, options here are sparse, and often egregiously overpriced. Case in point, the vegan protein powder I just bought for 67,000 Argentine pesos. That's about 48 USD. I could get the same amount of vegan protein powder in the U.S. for... 15 bucks! Bananas. To the point where I almost didn't buy it. On principle. But what would that have said about my values? A...
