The MyFitnessPal update

I got a lot of emails from frustrated clients this past week.

Apparently the new MyFitnessPal ("MFP" for the rest of this email) update is terrible.

So I downloaded the app for the first time in a while, and...

I don't disagree.

I actually switched from MFP to Cronometer three years ago, since:

  • I prefer the user interface (it's very simple)
  • Everything in the database has to be reviewed and approved—unlike MFP, where there are a lot of inaccurate entries
  • The data is more extensive

The only reasons I haven't recommended it to everyone more often:

  1. I think most tracking apps do virtually the same thing. So if you use an app you're content with, great. The grass probably isn't greener on another app
  2. MFP is still the most popular tracking app, so I create content accordingly (knowing most people will be using it)
  3. Although I personally like all the data on Cronometer, I could see it being overwhelming for somebody who doesn't know what to look at

But after looking at this latest MFP update, it's even more validation of my decision to switch to Cronometer.

Some other reasons I like Cronometer:

  • There's a barcode scanner, and if what you're scanning doesn't pop up: their AI is solid for reviewing it and adding it to the database
  • It's very easy to save your go-to meals and foods for easier future logging
  • You can schedule these to be logged on certain day! For example, my first two meals are the same every Monday-Friday, so I schedule them ONE time... and never have to think about it again
  • If you need to adjust a saved meal in your log, you can "blow up" the entry to see an itemized version that's easier to adjust
  • You can set up your log however you want. For example, I organize mine by the four times I usually eat each day: 7AM, 11AM, 3PM, and 7PM. Not breakfast, lunch, etc.
  • If you find the data overwhelming, you can hide and change how much of it you see

I realize many of these features aren't unique to Cronometer, but they're still reasons why I like the app.

At the moment, I'm moderately confident I'll be able to stay in Buenos Aires long-term. But like every other city I've lived in... government employees have been less than helpful and reliable. (To put it gently.) So to be proactive in case my situation changes, I've been spending a little more time on Reddit and in Facebook groups to see what the "best" cities to live in are right now. It's funny: If you read 10 posts about Buenos Aires—as an example—five will tell you: Living here sucks The...

Probably a year ago now, I read In Other Words on the recommendation of a client. It's a book about language learning, and the challenges and lessons that come with it. (Impressively, the author, Jhumpa Lahiri, wrote it in her third language: Italian.) An analogy in the book that resonated with me is how learning a language is like being on a beach, and having to swim out to an island to achieve fluency. But most people—myself included—only ever venture a little off shore (think basic...
