Seven years ago this week


This popped up on Facebook yesterday:

Me presenting at my first-ever event seven years ago!

I made it a charity event for the shelter I got these knuckleheads from:

It was far from a perfect event:

  • My presentation board was way too small for the amount of people we had and the room layout
  • I moved around a lot during my presentation
  • Some people said they couldn't really hear me during the group workout afterward (I let everybody spread out too much on a soccer field)

Despite all this... I got great feedback.

Several attendees said the presentations helped them feel much more clear on what actually matters for fat loss. Others appreciated the open Q&A and practical advice I gave.

Why am I telling you this?

It's not just to reminisce on a great memory.

It's to reemphasize how wildly unnecessary perfection is to accomplish something.

In fact, if that's what you're going for, you probably won't accomplish much—since life rarely lends itself to being able to execute perfectly.

A MUCH better strategy is consistently taking swift, imperfect action. Then making adjustments based on what you're learning and what's working.

That's how I went from this 22-person event to nearly 100 attendees at my next event six months later.


I see this perfectionist thinking and behavior all the time with nutrition and dieting:

  • You don't start a program because you "have a ton going on" and won't be able to "fully commit"
  • You stop tracking your food every time you know you'll go over your calories
  • You overdo it on lunch on Saturday... and don't even try at dinner because you're "off track" anyway
  • You consistently throw away the end of the week and wait until Monday to "start fresh" with your plan
  • You tell yourself you'll be able to focus on this more when things finally "calm down"

If this list sounds all-too-familiar, I'd love to help.
