I spent this past weekend in Puerto Madryn, a coastal city in Patagonia known for its marine life. It's very normal to see penguins, sea lions, elephant seals, and even whales right off the coast. As an animal lover, you can imagine how much I enjoyed this. I also enjoyed an enormous amount of food. Buenos Aires, despite being right on the water, isn't exactly known for its seafood. For that, you have to go farther south, where I was (Patagonia). I very much took advantage: lobster, shrimp, calimari, salmon, pejerrey (Argentine silverside), etc. Plus a bunch of risotto, pasta, bread, and sweet treats I don't typically have. I regret nothing.Eating like this isn't my norm, and what you do most of the time trumps what you do only sometimes. That said... I felt pretty gross when I got back to Buenos Aires on Tuesday: stuffed, puffy, and tired. So here's the reset protocol I used to shake this feeling ASAP:
I've already lost 4+ pounds of gut content and water and feel pretty great again. This was something I talked to Dal Sekhon about on this week's episode of Transformation Talks: how the "secret" to good health and fitness isn't making perfect choices 100% of the time. It's making sure the fun, flexible moments are exactly that: moments. Not a several-day thing. If this is something you struggle with—not spiraling—you can listen to our chat here:
We talked about how Dal broke out of the all-or-nothing cycle and lost 120 pounds, cultural and family considerations with food, and very low calorie diets. I'd love to know what you think! Sam |

"1,200 calories is for a toddler!" This is what I would've told you at 17 years old, as a brand new trainer. Partially because I believed it was true—partially because I saw other trainers getting crucified for telling their clients to eat 1,200 calories. So for a long time, I had 1,400 as an arbitrary floor that I wouldn't drop clients under. But here's the problem with this: Many people—especially women—maintain on 1,600-1,800 calories per day. So to lose weight at a reasonable, motivating...
On Tuesday, I dropped a podcast on how to look better—not just weigh less. Most people want to look better, obviously, but approach dieting as if their only goal IS weighing less. There are important differences between these pursuits, as my client Sarah knows. That's why she ditched her scale focus for a body composition focus, and lost almost 20 pounds of pure body fat using a specific four-step process. I broke down all four steps here: Spotify Apple Any other platform But I wish I...
I'd be lying if I said I was looking forward to Friday's Spanish lesson. I haven't been consistent with my study plan, and it shows. This is a pretty accurate depiction of me walking over to my kitchen table for the video call: My tutor, Lara Nur, couldn't have handled it any better. Instead of twisting the knife—something that would've made me feel even worse, and maybe even avoid future lessons—she asked me about: What, specifically, had been giving me trouble What felt realistic to commit...
