I don't know about you, but every year around Halloween, I see a lot of posts about charts like these: Or at least the thinking: that if you eat some candy, you need to try to burn it off via exercise. This is really outdated advice that I don't agree with.To echo much of the content about this topic, here's why:
But again, I'm sure you've already seen these takes. A less popular take that I have is: I actually think there's a valuable takeaway from charts like these.Despite the fact that everybody (understandably) dumps on them. What these charts do a good job of highlighting—intentionally or not—is how even small amounts of food can be hundreds of calories. I can tell you right now that most frustrated dieters underestimate this because they're focusing on volume: how much food is on their plate. Or isn't. But weight loss comes down to how many calories you're eating, not whether you're "not eating that much." Those aren't necessarily the same thing... as you can see in the chart. This isn't to say you need to avoid candy all week, and certainly not that you need to try to burn it off. Just to actually PLAN for the things you want to enjoy, so the seemingly insignificant treats don't erase your deficit. Sam P.S. If you could make any candy calorie-free for the week, which would you choose? For me, it's definitely Reese's. Either the classic version, Reese's Oreo, or the Take 5. |

Earlier this week, I told you how I don't immediately call "not having time to exercise" an excuse. Because many people, like my new Spanish teacher who inspired that email, seriously overestimate how much time they need to devote to exercise to get results. That's why I prefer to get curious before I throw out the "excuse" label. That's lazy and short-sighted. I also told you how I sent her a free two-day routine that only requires her to train twice a week for 30 minutes. (Want me to send...
After several months of online classes, I went back to an in-person Spanish school last week. The online classes have been great, but I want more practice speaking with other learners around my level. Funny enough... Nobody else came to the class. So it ended up being two hours of conversational practice with my teacher. I did better than I expected to, and we actually had a really fun conversation—at least for me—about fitness and nutrition. My poor teacher (probably) as I babbled about...
Today's email was going to be about how the holidays may be "crazy busy"... But when is life not? When have you ever had a 2-3 month stretch where fat loss was convenient? Obviously never. Which is a reminder people need this time of year when they're kicking the fat loss can into January, when things will be similarly busy—like they always are. But after I began writing about this topic, I thought of several other reminders you may need to hear today: 1) The holidays aren't as unique as...
